Sunlight does not illuminate the dark part of the moon, but light reflected from the earth's surface reaches the dark part of the moon and illuminates it slightly. It is called Earthshine. This phenomenon is visible when the moon is a narrow crescent. This photo was taken on September 16, 2020 by Iraj Safaei at the University of  Kashan Observatory.
